It is with a great deal of enthusiasm the Tacoma Highland Games Association prepares for the June 23, 2012 Highland Games. The Board of Directors and Key Volunteers are committed to: (1) offering a day filled with Celtic entertainment, (2) providing a family friendly event, (3) increasing attendance, (4) broadening our audience, (5) expanding our advertising, (6) recruiting additional volunteers, (7) making Frontier Park physically accessible to everyone, and (8) supporting new and innovative activities for the enjoyment of our attendees.
To assist in promoting the Tacoma Highland Games in 2012, our Association was awarded a $10,000 grant from the Pierce County Department of Community Connections. We also appreciate the support of the Tacoma Sports Commission who will help with advertising, recruitment assistance, a link to their web and social media sites, provide visitor information and lend us event-day supplies. In receiving Lodging Tax funds, the Association must show an increase in the total impact on the local economy. We will continue to take censusdata as attendees enter Frontier Park and expand the promotion of our event to attract visitors to Pierce County. Board members and key volunteers have stepped forward with some very new and innovative ideas including: Whiskey Tasting, an expansion of Children’s activities, new piping and dancing competition |
sections, posters and brochures featuring family friendly activities, visitor friendly shuttle routes from the parking area, postcard advertising, and a relocation of key activities in Frontier Park.
Next, we are planning the second February Fling at the Firehouse Pub in Buckley on February 12th. We invite friends and family to this benefit for the Association. The Open House will feature Red McWilliams, one of the most recognized names in Celtic music in the country. I recognize how busy everyone’s lives are! Even if you are unable to serve on the Board of Directors or act as a Key Volunteer, you can help! Please renew your membership and forward information to your friends and acquaintances. Also, please visit www.tacomagames.org for information on how to become a volunteer and how to help support the Games with your donations.— —Diana Kildow, President
